If your goal is to browse with every cookie disabled, expect more broken sign-ins, checkouts, embedded tools, and saved preferences. First-party cookies often provide those functions. Necessary describes a cookie's purpose; first-party describes its context. Cross-site restriction is the more practical default.

Do not treat a visible “Reject all” choice as proof that collection stopped.

In a 97,000-site study, researchers found that 65.4% of sites offering rejection likely collected user data despite explicit negative consent. Defense should not depend on the banner alone.

Blockify is a separate filtering layer, not a replacement for browser cookie controls.

Browser settings

Use the safer setting in each browser

Choose the least disruptive control your browser offers. The labels differ, but the goal stays the same: restrict cross-site tracking while preserving the first-party state needed for sign-ins, preferences, and carts.

  • Chrome

    Practical setting
    Open Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies. Choose Block third-party cookies.
    What it does
    Chrome requires this change in regular browsing. Incognito blocks third-party cookies by default.
  • Edge

    Practical setting
    Keep Tracking prevention set to Balanced. To block third-party cookies too, open Cookies and turn on Block third-party cookies.
    What it does
    Balanced blocks harmful trackers and trackers from sites you have not visited. Stricter controls can affect sign-in or video.
  • Firefox

    Practical setting
    Leave Enhanced Tracking Protection on Standard unless you need stricter blocking.
    What it does
    Total Cookie Protection partitions cookies into a separate jar for each site, limiting cross-site tracking by default.
  • Safari

    Practical setting
    On a Mac, open Safari Settings, select Privacy, then enable Prevent cross-site tracking.
    What it does
    Safari restricts third-party cookies and website data used to follow you between sites.
  • Brave

    Practical setting
    Keep Shields enabled with its default setting to block third-party cookies.
    What it does
    Brave allows first-party cookies and blocks third-party cookies by default.

Keep global protection on

If a site breaks, loosen one site only

A sign-in loop, blank payment form, missing embedded editor, stalled download, or video that will not play can mean the site depends on cross-site cookies.

    Reload once to rule out a temporary page error.

    Where available, open the site's cookie, shield, or tracking-control panel and allow third-party cookies only for that site.

    If the browser offers only a global control, restore protection immediately after testing.

    Remove the exception after you finish if you do not need it again.

Make exceptions only for sites you trust. Some browsers loosen more than cookie storage when you add a tracking-protection exception, so remove it when the site no longer needs it.

The privacy ceiling

What cookie blocking cannot stop

Cookies are only one way to recognize a browser. Cookie blocking remains useful, but it is not total privacy.

A site can also use your IP address, request headers, device characteristics, pixels, link parameters, local storage, or activity tied to a signed-in account. It can keep records on its own servers after you clear local cookies.

The W3C's fingerprinting guidance explains that a fingerprint can correlate visits across sessions and sites even when cookie rules prevent sharing. Neither clearing cookies nor using a VPN necessarily prevents that correlation.

Cookie blocking still removes a common tracking route. Treat it as one privacy layer, alongside tracker blocking, anti-fingerprinting protections, careful site permissions, and account-level data controls.
Common questions

Common questions about blocking cookies

Usually not. Blocking every cookie can break sign-ins, shopping carts, payments, language preferences, and other useful features. Blocking third-party cookies while allowing first-party cookies is usually less disruptive, although some cross-site sign-ins and embeds still need an exception.

Blockify's current extension does not provide general cookie-store controls or delete cookies already saved in your browser. Its request filtering may prevent some known tracking resources from loading and setting cookies.

Blockify removes some intrusive pop-up and overlay ads, but its public documentation does not identify cookie-consent handling as a feature. Cookie prompts may remain, and you may still need to reject non-essential cookies yourself.

No. Private browsing limits what remains on your device after the session, but websites and trackers can still observe activity while the window is open. It also does not stop fingerprinting.

Sites often store your consent choice in a cookie. If the site keeps that choice only on your device, clearing site data or ending a private session can remove it, so the banner may return.
